Cooling for Toyota RunX

Clogged radiator cores, thermostat failures and weeping water pump seals head the RunX cooling complaint list, especially on 1ZZ-FE 160i cars that run slightly warmer under SA summer traffic. The toyota runx cooling stock covers OE-spec used radiators for all three variants, water pumps tested for shaft play and seal integrity, thermostat housings with gaskets, and full radiator hose kits. The 2ZZ-GE 180i RSi runs a slightly larger-capacity radiator and an uprated electric fan, which are stocked separately when RSi donors arrive.

Used RunX radiators land at R520-R1,100 depending on fin condition and whether the plastic end tanks show cracking. Water pumps run R260-R620 tested. Expansion tanks, fan shrouds, complete electric cooling fans with motors, upper and lower radiator hoses, heater cores and bleed screws are all listed individually. For high-mileage 1ZZ-FE cooling refreshes, both depots recommend replacing the thermostat alongside the water pump because the two fail within overlapping service windows. Pressure-testing any used radiator at 1.2 bar for 15 minutes is offered on request before dispatch.

Cooling for Toyota RunX — Frequently Asked

How often should a RunX radiator be replaced?

Under typical SA conditions a RunX radiator lasts 130,000-180,000km before core oxidation or end-tank cracking appears. Cars running inadequate coolant-to-water ratios fail earlier. A tested used OE radiator at R520-R1,100 is usually more cost-effective than the R1,600-R3,200 for a new aftermarket equivalent.

Is the RSi cooling system the same as a standard 160i?

No — the 2ZZ-GE RSi uses a slightly larger-capacity radiator core, an uprated electric fan, and routes coolant through an oil cooler not fitted to the 140i or 160i. RSi-specific cooling parts are flagged and priced separately because the higher-output 1.8 VVTL-i engine demands the additional thermal capacity.

Can you pressure-test a used radiator before sending?

Yes. On request, both depots will pressure-test any used RunX radiator at 1.2 bar for 15 minutes and log the result (hold, slow drop, or fail). The test adds nothing to the price but confirms the core and end tanks are leak-free before you commit to workshop fitment costs.
