Older Prados are refreshingly simple, newer ones less so. The J90 has minimal electronics — a basic ECU on the 5VZ-FE, mechanical pump on the 1KZ-TE, standard wiring. The J120 introduced common-rail diesel ECU management and KDSS control. The J150 added Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist Control, adaptive cruise on facelift models, and a significantly more complex body control architecture. Can I use a second-hand 1KD-FTV ECU in my Prado without re-keying?

Only if you get the ECU with all its matched keys and transponders. Otherwise a specialist has to either flash the ECU to your existing keys or marry new keys to the second-hand ECU. Budget R1,500-R3,000 on top of the ECU price. Most reputable auto-electricians in JHB or CPT handle this on a walk-in basis.
