Transmission for Toyota Hilux

Hilux gearboxes are workhorses, but heavy towing and high-mileage service eventually kills synchros, clutches, and the occasional torque converter. We stock toyota hilux transmission components across every SA variant: complete manual gearboxes, automatics, clutches, flywheels, differentials, transfer cases and driveshafts. The 5-speed manual behind the 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 is the most common order; the AC60 6-speed automatic is next.

Transfer cases fail less frequently than gearboxes, but when they go the cost climbs — used OEM transfer cases from CPT donors typically save 50-60% versus new. Differentials (front and rear) are sold assembled by ratio, so quote your axle code or VIN. Clutch kits for the 2GD-FTV and 1GD-FTV run R3,800-R7,500 for new aftermarket (dual-mass flywheel excluded), and the JHB depot carries Luk and Valeo stock. If the dual-mass flywheel is chattering at idle, budget R9,000-R15,000 for a replacement unit.

Transmission for Toyota Hilux — Frequently Asked

How much is a used Hilux 6-speed automatic gearbox?

Used AC60 6-speed automatic gearboxes behind the 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 typically trade R25,000-R40,000 depending on mileage and whether the valve body has been reconditioned. We test-drive the donor bakkie before removal where possible and supply shift-quality notes. Budget for fresh ATF and a new gasket at installation.

Can I swap a 2.4 GD-6 gearbox into a 2.8 GD-6?

Mechanically the bellhousing bolts up, but the final-drive ratio in the transfer case differs between 2.4 and 2.8 variants, and the ECU calibration expects the matched ratio. We advise swapping like-for-like — the price difference is small enough that compatibility issues are not worth the saving.

Do you stock used Hilux transfer cases?

Yes. 4x4 transfer cases for the Hilux (both part-time and full-time variants) are available from CPT-dismantled donors. Typical price R9,000-R18,000. We verify high-range, low-range and 4H/4L engagement on the donor before removal. Front and rear prop shafts are sold separately but usually available from the same donor.
