Suspension for Toyota Hilux

The Hilux runs coil-over-strut front suspension with a live rear axle on leaf springs (single-cab/workhorse) or coil springs with trailing arms on higher trims. Our toyota hilux suspension range covers every variant from the 1997 Vigo through the Legend 50: shock absorbers, struts, springs, control arms, ball joints and bushings. Sway bar links and stabilizer bars are in stock for both GD-6 and older D-4D generations.

If the front end is clunking over speed bumps, it is almost always the lower ball joints or the control arm bushings — we stock both as new aftermarket (JHB) and used OEM (CPT). For bakkies that run heavy loads, we carry uprated leaf springs and helper-spring kits. Legend 50 and Raider buyers often come in for coilovers — performance Bilstein and Old Man Emu sets are a regular request, and we refer those direct to the JHB depot.

Suspension for Toyota Hilux — Frequently Asked

What are the symptoms of a worn Hilux ball joint?

Clunking over bumps, uneven tyre wear on the outer edge, and vague steering feedback all point to lower ball joints. On the Hilux, the lowers typically fail between 120,000 and 180,000 km, especially on farm-spec bakkies. We stock both new aftermarket and used OEM ball joints — replace in pairs, not singly.

Do you sell uprated leaf springs for the Hilux?

Yes. For single-cab and workhorse Hilux variants, we carry heavy-duty leaf-spring packs rated for 500 kg-1 ton additional payload. A standard uprated set runs R3,500-R6,500 per side. We do not recommend adding leaves to an existing pack — rather swap the full assembly to preserve ride geometry.

Can I use Fortuner shock absorbers on a Hilux?

Shock absorbers are not cross-compatible. The Fortuner runs independent rear suspension while the Hilux runs a live axle — the rear shock mounts and travel are completely different. Front shocks also differ by tune. Always source Hilux-specific shocks by donor year and variant to avoid ride-height and damping issues.
