Cooling for Toyota Hi-Ace

Cooling is a genuine stress point on a hard-working Hi-Ace — these minibuses carried passengers and cargo for a decade plus without much fleet-level maintenance attention, and tired radiators are a regular reason donors land in the CPT yard. Our toyota hi-ace cooling stock covers radiators, water pumps, thermostats, radiator fans, radiator hoses, expansion tanks and heater cores for the 2L, 2L-T, 3L diesel and 2Y/2RZ-FE petrol variants. Used OEM radiators from CPT donors at R650-R1,400 pressure-tested; new aftermarket replacements from the JHB depot at R1,400-R2,800.

The classic Hi-Ace radiator failure is plastic-tank cracking at the top seam after years of thermal cycling — a pressure test confirms the fault. Water pumps on the 2L and 3L diesels fail around 150,000-250,000 km; R650-R1,400 new aftermarket. Thermostats are cheap (R180-R450) but often overlooked — always replace with the water pump. Radiator fan clutches on the 2Y petrol variant commonly fail the bimetal spring; simple test (spin the fan cold — free-spinning means failed clutch). Heater cores on classic donors sometimes leak into the cabin footwell; used OEM heater cores R380-R850.

Cooling for Toyota Hi-Ace — Frequently Asked

How much is a new Hi-Ace radiator?

New aftermarket radiators for the H100 2L, 2L-T and 3L diesel run R1,400-R2,800 from the JHB depot. Petrol 2Y radiators priced similarly. Used OEM radiators from CPT donors at R650-R1,400 pressure-tested. Always replace the radiator cap, upper and lower hoses, thermostat and clamps at the same job — cheap insurance against a repeat overheat.

Should I replace the water pump with the timing cover?

On the 2L, 2L-T and 3L diesels, the water pump is driven by the front gear train (not a timing belt), so the labour overlap is not as dramatic as on newer Toyota diesels. That said, if you have the front cover off for any reason — head gasket, timing gear inspection, crankshaft seal — fit a fresh water pump and thermostat at the same time. R650-R1,400 for a quality aftermarket pump plus R180-R450 for a thermostat is cheap insurance.

Do you stock heater cores for the classic Hi-Ace?

Yes. Used OEM heater cores for the H50 and H100 run R380-R850 from CPT-dismantled donors, pressure-tested for leaks. New aftermarket cores are scarce for older variants — used OEM is usually the realistic path. The telltale sign of a failed heater core is coolant smell in the cabin and wet footwell carpet on the passenger side. Budget a full coolant flush at replacement.
