Brakes for Toyota Cressida

Classic sedan braking systems are simpler than anything currently on the road — no ABS modules, no stability control, no electronic calipers to code. That cuts both ways for toyota cressida brakes: cheap to repair when parts are available, frustrating when a reproduction master cylinder hasn't been made for a decade. We stock both ends: new aftermarket brake pads, brake shoes, brake discs and brake hoses from the JHB depot where the 22R-era bolt pattern overlaps with early Hilux and Land Cruiser, plus used OEM brake calipers, drums and master cylinders stripped from X70 and X80 donors at CPT.

X30/X40/X60 Cressidas ran drum brakes on the rear with front discs; X70 onward standardised vented discs up front. Most classic-sedan brake complaints trace to seized caliper sliders after long storage, not to pad wear — we always recommend rebuilding the caliper with new seals before blaming the master cylinder. Brake fluid is standard DOT 3 or DOT 4; flush every two years on any RWD sedan that has been stood.

Brakes for Toyota Cressida — Frequently Asked

Can I still get brake pads for a 1988 Cressida?

Yes. Front brake pads for the X70 and X80 Cressida share a pad shape with early Hilux and Celica Supra, so aftermarket suppliers like Mintex, Ferodo and Bosch still list them. Expect R350-R900 for a front pad set from the JHB depot. Rear shoes for earlier drum-braked X30/X40 cars are harder to find — ring through and we'll confirm stock.

Do you stock used Cressida brake calipers?

Intermittently. Front brake calipers pulled from X70 and X80 donors at the CPT depot run R600-R1,400 each, stripped, with the seals inspected and the piston checked for free movement before sale. We strongly recommend rebuilding with a new seal kit (R250-R450) rather than fitting used calipers straight to the vehicle after years of storage.

Is a Cressida master cylinder cross-compatible with other Toyotas?

The X80 master cylinder shares internals with certain early Supra and Celica units, so reconditioned stock occasionally surfaces. We bench-test pressure before dispatch. For X70 and earlier cars, reproduction supply has ended — used OEM is the only path, typically R650-R1,400, and we always flush-test before it leaves the depot.
